Taking on a half marathon is no small commitment, but for one determined runner from Hydro Group Limited, it’s about much more than crossing the finish line. It’s about giving back, supporting community, and running with purpose for All Life Chances.
We caught up with Michelle Thornhill ahead of the Run Garioch Half Marathon to hear more about her motivation, preparation, and what this challenge means to her.
So Michelle… tell us a bit about yourself!
Where do you work and what is your role?
I work at Hydro Group Limited as an Accounts Coordinator.
How long have you been with the company?
I’ve been there for a year.
What made you decide to take on the Run Garioch Half Marathon?
All Life Chances really reflects the values my parents instilled in me and my siblings. I’ve always believed in the importance of supporting your local community and giving back in any way you can. Taking on this challenge felt like a meaningful way to do that.
Have you done anything like this before?
I actually ran the Garioch Half Marathon in my twenties ‘for fun’, but this is the first time I’ve done it in support of a cause. That makes it feel even more worthwhile.
Why do you believe the work of All Life Chances is so important?
I strongly support the charity’s mission to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, feels empowered to make the most of life’s opportunities.
Growing up, my parents created an environment where we felt capable of achieving anything. I know not everyone has access to that kind of support, so it’s important to give back and help other families build similar foundations and access opportunities we were fortunate to have.
How are you preparing for the half marathon?
I’ve been following a structured eight-week training plan (carefully mapped out with a little help from ChatGPT!). My longest run is coming up this Sunday - 19km - so that will be a big milestone.
My husband has been running alongside me too, which has been a great distraction from all the imaginary reasons I come up with to stop!
Are you feeling nervous or excited?
I’m really excited. Especially because I’ll be running with my sister in support of the charity. That makes it even more special.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge?
Definitely sticking to a steady pace… and the course itself! It’s basically one giant hill with very little downhill, so it’s going to be tough.
Is this pushing you out of your comfort zone?
I’ve been consistent with my training plan, so I feel mentally and physically prepared. That’s helped me feel more confident going into it.
What are you most looking forward to?
Running with my sister and seeing our families at the finish line. That will be such a rewarding moment, I’m sure.
Will anyone be there to cheer you on?
Yes. Our families will be there to support us at the finish line, and my younger children have even made posters to cheer on all the runners, which is really lovely.
How important is it for businesses to support charities?
I think it’s really important that businesses support charities where they can. Even something as simple as sharing a fuandraising page can help spread the word, raise awareness, and make a difference in the community.
With strong motivation, a solid training plan, and plenty of family support behind her, Michelle’s more than ready to take on the Run Garioch Half Marathon. All in aid of helping others access the opportunities they deserve.
