Taking on a Firewalk is no small feat, but Mark Mathers from Dana Petroleum is doing it to go the extra mile for children, young people, and families supported by All Life Chances.
We caught up with Mark ahead of the big event to find out why he’s taking on this fiery challenge, and how he's gearing up for it.
So Mark…
🔥 What is your job at Dana?
I’m a Document Controller.
🔥 How long have you been with the company?
3.5 years.
🔥 What made you decide to do the Firewalk?
I’m taking part because I strongly relate to All Life Chances’ core values and mission, particularly the belief that people experiencing poverty can often feel they have no voice and can feel vulnerable and powerless.
I grew up in a single-parent household with a disabled sibling in what many would describe as prosperous areas. Despite how things may have appeared from the outside, I faced social and economic challenges from and early age and experienced exclusion because of my circumstances.
Anything I can do to help others avoid the same or similar challenges - or even experience them to a lesser extent - has my full support.
🔥 Have you done anything like this before?
No. And not to sound like a weirdo… but I’ve always wanted to do one.
🔥 Why do you believe the work of All Life Chances is important?
All Life Chances helps children experience opportunities and access support they might otherwise go without, through absolutely no fault of their own. That’s incredibly important.
The charity supports children, young people and families who need it most, ensuring they are heard, supported and given opportunities to thrive. That’s something worth walking over hot coals for.
🔥 How are you preparing mentally for the Firewalk?
Watching Terminator 2 on repeat. There’s a lot of fire in that film!
🔥 Are you nervous or excited?
Excited right now, although I’ve no doubt that will switch to nervousness just before the walk starts.
🔥 What do you think the biggest challenge will be?
I might shave my legs… haha!
🔥 Is this pushing you out of your comfort zone?
Honestly? I’m fine with it.
🔥 What are you most looking forward to?
Taking part is what counts, especially while helping All Life Chances. The whole process has been enjoyable so far.
🔥 Will anyone be there to cheer you on?
My wife will be there and lots of people are already asking for video footage of the event.
🔥 How important is it for businesses to support charities?
If businesses are in a position to support charities, it’s vital they do so.
I’m fortunate that my employer offers volunteer days to all staff, and that kind of backing makes a huge difference. It’s not just about financial donations. Giving people time and space to use their skills to support charities can be just as impactful.
Why It Matters
All Life Chances supports children, young people and families facing poverty and disadvantage. Many feel unheard, excluded or powerless, but with the right support, that can change.
We’re incredibly grateful to supporters like Mark who are willing to take bold steps (literally!) to help create brighter futures.
