Aberdeen is a city shaped by the oil and gas industry, a global centre for energy and engineering that has brought wealth, jobs, and international recognition. Yet beneath this economic success, many communities in the city face significant challenges. Families and young people in some of Aberdeen’s most deprived areas struggle with social inequality, limited access to services, and a shortage of safe, supportive spaces. In these neighbourhoods, community hubs are not just helpful. They are essential.

Community hubs are more than just buildings; they are places where people can come together, feel safe, and access the support they need to thrive. For children and young people, hubs provide spaces to play, learn, and build confidence. For families, they offer access to advice, guidance, and social networks that reduce isolation and strengthen wellbeing. For the wider community, hubs act as focal points for collaboration, where residents, local organisations, and businesses can work together to identify needs and deliver meaningful solutions.

The impact of community hubs is especially clear in Aberdeen. In areas like Tillydrone, where economic and social challenges are significant despite the city’s overall wealth, hubs provide vital support for young people and families. By offering structured activities, mentoring, and programmes, these spaces help improve educational outcomes, promote health and wellbeing, and create opportunities that might not otherwise exist. They also encourage community cohesion, giving residents a sense of pride, belonging, and agency in shaping their neighbourhoods.

At All Life Chances, we have seen the transformative effect of community hubs first-hand. Our initial work in Tillydrone focused on providing business support, fundraising guidance, and networking opportunities, helping local organisations build capacity to deliver more and better services.

Building on this success, we are now expanding into Northfield, helping enhance Northfield Community Centre and developing programmes tailored to local needs. Each hub we support becomes a place where people feel valued, connected, and empowered: a true centre of opportunity and community life.

Community hubs are most effective when the private, public, and third sectors work together. At All Life Chances, we act as a bridge to the private sector in Aberdeen, connecting businesses with community organisations and local authorities. This collaboration ensures that resources, expertise, and opportunities reach the people and areas that need them most, creating lasting positive impact across the city.

In Aberdeen, thriving communities start with thriving hubs. They are spaces where children, young people, and families can grow, connect, and access the opportunities and support they need. By investing in community hubs, we invest in the heart of the city and in the people who make it strong, resilient, and united.
